The team had long been the league's perennial underdogs, consistently plagued by a lack of wins, financial resources, and team morale. After assembling a group of incoming freshmen with the goal of revitalizing the program, the Tigers suffered a crushing defeat in their inaugural season. However, over subsequent years, the team gradually improved, securing more victories and earning greater respect. By the 2009 season, Courtney established a bold objective: to achieve the Tigers' first playoff victory in the school's 110-year history.
